LA JOLLA, California – For the eighth year in a row, the San Diego Chapter of the California Restaurant Association has named Café Japengo the “Best Sushi Bar” in San Diego during this year’s Gold Medallion Banquet Awards, a peer-to-peer awards dinner recognizing worthy and exceptional local restaurants. It is an opportunity for members to acknowledge their fellow restaurateurs for their business practices, concepts and achievements in nearly 40 award categories.
Café Japengo, a local favorite, recently celebrated its 17th Anniversary as it continues to wow diners with its eclectic mix of awe-inspiring “fusion” cuisine and sushi bar.
Café Japengo is home to two world-class chefs who treat guests to a culinary adventure that blends exotic flavors from around the world. Executive Sushi Chef Jerry Warner, who was part of the opening staff of the restaurant in 1990, honed his skills as an apprentice to Japengo’s first sushi Master, Sushi Chef Osamu “Fuji” Fujita. Warner’s specialties include Stuffed Tempura, Tuna Sashimi and Yellowtail Ceviche. Café Japengo’s newest star, Executive Chef Jay Payne, was born and raised in San Diego and oversees all hot food preparation at the restaurant.
